In 1928 the Gendron Pedal Car Company introduced the “Pioneer Pedal Aeroplanes” series. They included the Air Scout No. 8 pedal planes, the Columbia “Air Pilot” No. 10 pedal planes and the “Spirit of St. Louis” No. 12 pedal planes. The no 8 and no 10 pedal airplanes models were equipped with rubber pedals, stationery wings and an automobile steering wheel. The no. 12 pedal airplane had two-piece rubber pedals, wings which worked up and down through the action of the treadles, an automobile steering wheel and ball bearing front hanger brackets. Two years later, in 1930, the Montgomery Ward & Co. catalog offered two pedal planes, the “Air Pilot” and the “Spirit of St. Louis” pedal planes for sale (brand new) for $10.98 ea. Then in the 1931-32 catalogs – they offered a new package of pedal airplanes and included a free helmet for the whopping sum of 8.98. Unfortunately, these could not be mailed and had to be purchased at one of their stores. In 1942 the Joseph Hagn company developed a more sophisticated, aluminum body pedal plane. The Divebomber included an anti-aircraft gun that spouted harmless sparks and an instrument board. The famous Murray pedal car and pedal plane manufacturer created a 41 LB pedal airplane called the P-900 Atomic Missile which included realistic dual guided missile controls, simulated gauges and instruments with a gear shift and jeweled reflector.
Now, in the 21st century, we offer an extraordinary selection of retro-style pedal planes that allow your child to take to the skies using their imagination and one of our stylish steel pedal airplane reproductions. All our pedal planes are designed for many years of “flying” enjoyment for children.
The smile you’ll see when they climb into one of these classic pedal planes is priceless. One of our favorite reasons for being in the pedal car and pedal plane business is that these pedal planes, with a modest amount of care, can last for decades and be passed on from generation to generation.
These pedal planes make excellent heirloom gifts and can also be the perfect addition to the pedal plane collection for the discerning pedal toy collector.
